Coro Infantil de la OFGC

The Coro Infantil de la Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria (Children’s Choir of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Gran Canaria) started to gain importance when the Choir performed and recorded Mahler’s Symphony No 3 together with the Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria in 1995. A year later, the Children’s Choir performed in two operas of the Festival de Ópera de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Starting from the 1998-1999 season, the Children’s Choir is included in the Foundation OFGC general choral project, offering concerts and educational activities. Most important projects of the Coro Infantil de la Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria were its major roles in the scholar and family concerts Vaya clase, maestro and the operas Brundibár, ¡Socorro, socorro, los Globolinks! and El planeta Analfabia. The Children’s Choir has also participated in the Christmas concerts of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in the Plaza Santa Ana, together with Los Gofiones, Los Sabandeños and Cantaores and the Christmas concerts of Radio Televisión Española, broadcasted on the Spanish international channel.     

The Coro Infantil de la Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria has also participated in the Festival de Música de Canarias, together with the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne conducted by Semyon Bychkov, the Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria and the Orquesta Sinfónica de Tenerife with the BBC Choir, performing Carmina Burana, Berlioz’s L’enfance de Christ, Albéniz’s Henry Clifford, Britten’s War Requiem, as well as operas such as Norma, Carmen, The damnation of Faust, Tosca, Werther, Pagliacci and La Bohème. In the Teatro Pérez Galdós, the Children’s Choir participated in the first performance of La Hija del Cielo by Falcón Sanabria, together with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and Gerd Albrecht. The Children’s Choir has also recorded Ravel’s Ma Mère l’Oie for the label “La Mota de Polvo” of AgrupArte. 

The Children’s Choir has performed in thirteen municipalities of the Island with a repertoire from Bach to Britten, participating in the cycles “Gran Canaria Coral” and “Gran Canaria en concierto” of the Fundación Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria, as well as in the Holy Week concerts of the Fundación Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria. The Children’s Choir has also participated as International Academy of Choral Conducting and Musical Pedagogy of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Marcela Garrón Velarde conducts and prepares the Coro Infantil since 2000.
