Luis García Santana

Born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, he studied music in the Professional Higher Conservatory of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. He graduated in Musicology from the University of Oviedo and he obtained a degree in Cultural Heritage Management from the Spanish Open University in 2004. He studied singing with María Isabel Torón Macario and, in turn with maestros like Alfredo Kraus, Sesto Bruscantini and Suso Mariategui, whose pupil he was in the International Pérez Galdós University Interpretation Courses. As a singer, he has performed in many supporting roles in the Opera Festivals of Las Palmas, Oviedo, Bilbao (Teatro Arriaga) and, more recently, in the Canary Island Music Festival (The Condemnation of Faust, 2004), as well as with other institutions like the Asturias Symphony Orchestra, RNE and Promuscan.

As Choir Master, he was trained by Juan José Falcón Sanabria and José Antonio García in the Canary Islands, and by Laszlo Heltay, Diego Ramón Lluch and Manuel Hernández Silva in Asturias.

He has taken part in conductors’ seminars with Josep Prats, Hansruedi Kämpfe, Filippo Maria Bressan and Marcus Creed in Berlin (2004). He was the conductor of the Llanera Polyphonic Choir (1992-2000) and the Choir of the Asociación Asturiana de Amigos de la Ópera de Oviedo (1993-2000), with whom he has toured most of Spain and has made two records. He has worked with opera conductors such as  Maximiano Valdés (Le nozze di Figaro, Don Carlo, Don Giovanni), Giuliano Carella (Falstaff), David Parry, Peter Maag, Alberto Zedda, Antoni Ros Marbà, Miguel Roa, Renato Palumbo, Miguel Ángel Veltri o Stefano Ranzani.

In September 2000, Luis García Santana took over as director of the Coro de la Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria (OFGC Choir) nd Coro Mateo Guerra, performing a wide range of works such as Orff’s Carmina Burana, Kodály’s Missa Brevis, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle, Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, a programme of Bach’s Cantatas (Actus Tragicus, among them) and the new  formula of concert-conference Wagner en chanclas. Together with the OFGC Choir, he has also conducted popular repertoire such as Cantata del Corredera or Tiempo de Gran Canaria as a tribute to Néstor Álamo.

In July 2006, he conducted the Zhejiang Symphony Orchestra, performing a programme of Schumann, Rimsky-Korsakov and Rachmaninov.  In August 2008, he conducted the Orquesta Sinfónica de Las Palmas and the tenors Celso Albelo and Francisco Corujo in an opera gala. As a choirmaster, he has also visited Never (France) and Lido di Jesolo (Venice).

He was a teacher of singing and choral singing in the municipal schools of music of Llanera and Pravia in Asturias, and he was monitor of singing and conducting choirs in several courses organised by the Asturian Choral Federation (FECORA) and teaching director on the OFGC Foundation Course on Choral Conducting.

He has won prizes for his work as choir master of the Oviedo Opera Choir, including the prize for outstanding character of the 1997 Season. He has also worked extensively as a music critic for the newspaper “La Nueva España” and he has written many hand programmes for the Asturias Music Festival, the Asturias Symphony Orchestra, the Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra, and he has translated librettos for the Las Palmas and Oviedo opera seasons. He has also participated in conferences (Puccini, Sociedad Filarmónica) and round table meetings on singing (Campus de Excelencia, 2008). 

In July 2010, he conducted Carmina Burana with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Las Palmas and the OFGC Choir in the Festival de Teatro y Danza de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Next November, he will conduct an opera gala with young Canary Islands artists for the Asociación Canaria de Zarzuela.
