Luís García Santana

director

The Coro de Cámara “Mateo Guerra” (“Mateo Guerra” Chamber Choir) is made up of members of the Coro de la Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria (Choir of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Gran Canaria), aiming to tackle a repertoire different from choral symphonic works. In 2000, they premiered in the Church of San Francisco (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria) with a programme by Polish composers, conducted by Marcin Lukasz Mazur. That same year, conducted by Luis García Santana, the Chamber Choir took part in the Ciclo de Navidad, with concerts in Agaete and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. In 2002, the programme was dedicated to Renaissance with Golden Age of Polyphony in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Agaete, Valleseco, Santa Brígida, La Aldea and other municipalities in the island, as well as Nevers (France) and Puerto de La Cruz (Tenerife).

From the year 2002, and taking Holy Week cycles as the main point in its performances, the Coro de Cámara “Mateo Guerra” has offered a variety of programmes of different styles such as Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle, Liszt’s Via Crucis, Brahms’ Liebeslieder Walzer, Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, Fauré’s Réquiem in original version, Bach’s cantatas (Actus Tragicus, among them), as well as works by Schubert, Tavener, Schnittke, Duruflé, Messiaen, Rutter, etc. The Coro de Cámara usually collaborates with the Auditorium Alfredo Kraus in cycles such as Canary Islands Young Performers in 2003 with works by Pachelbel, B. Marcello, Janácek, Rodolfo Halffter, Prieto and Rossini, and in 2004 the Chamber Choir was invited to participate in the opening of the Cycle of Organ Music with organist Volodimir Kotenko performing works by Bach, Mozart, Liszt, Kodály and Fauré.

The Coro de Cámara “Mateo Guerra” has participated also in the honors and distinctions awarding ceremony of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, as well as the official opening of the Year Luján Pérez in Guía and cultural events related with the hundredth anniversary of the Bajada de la Virgen del Pino in the Cathedral of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The Chamber Choir also offered the Christmas Concert of the Sociedad Filarmónica de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 2007 in the Teatro Pérez Galdós with works by Britten, Tippett and tradicional Spanish carols.

Over the last years, the repertoire of the Coro de Cámara “Mateo Guerra” encompasses also lyric works, offering a selection of Orfeo ed Euridice by Gluck in the theatre CICCA, Dido and Aeneas by Purcell in co-production with the Gabinete Literario and their debut on stage with Così fan tutte in the Teatro Pérez Galdós conducted by Iván Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra.

In the Holy Week cycle Semana Santa Musical Gran Canaria 2009, the Chamber Choir offered a programme called Wagner en chanclas containing a selection of transcriptions, fantasies and readings related to the German composer. After this concert, the Chamber Choir was invited to repeat the same programme in the “Aula Wagner” of the Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

In 2009, the Coro de Cámara “Mateo Guerra” carried out the first performance in the Canary Islands of Der Rose Pilgerfahrt by Robert Schumann in the Sala de Cámara of the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus, Le nozze di Figaro by Mozart in the Teatro Pérez Galdós, again with Iván Fischer. Among their future projects, we highlight the Petite Messe Solennelle by Rossini on the Holy Week cycle next March 2010.
