Coro de la OFGC

Luis García Santana

choirmaster

Created in 1994, the Coro de la Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria (Choir of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Gran Canaria) was formed with a view to giving the Orchestra a stable, dependent choir capable of meeting the needs of the ample symphonic-choral repertoire. Over the last fifteen years, the Choir has performed a wide range of musical styles and concerts, consolidating their pedagogical division and their prestige. Pedro Halffter, Günther Herbig, Jesús López Cobos, Neville Marriner, Rudolf Barshai, Reinhard Goebel, Víctor Pablo Pérez, Adrian Leaper, Antoni Ros Marbà, John Nelson and Frans Brüggen are some of the leading maestros that have conducted the Coro de la Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria.

The Choir has performed works such as Bach’s Magnificat, Saint John’s Passion and Christmas Oratory, Mozart’s Messiah (including German version), Requiem and Coronation Mass, Haydn’s The Creation and  Missa in tempore belli de Haydn, Schubert’s Mass D.950, Beethoven’s  Symphony No 9, Berlioz’s The  damnation of Faust and L’enfance de Christ, Bruckner’s Te Deum, Elgar’s The dream of Gerontius, Verdi’s Requiem, Puccini’s Messa di Gloria, Mompou’s Improperios, Dvorák’s  Stabat Mater, Brahms’ Schicksalslied and Nänie, Orff’s Carmina Burana, Kodály’s Missa Brevis, Villa Lobos’ Chôros No 3 and No 10, Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé (complete ballet), Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The First Walpurgis Night and Shostakovich’s Babi Yar Symphony.

Thanks to its versatility, the Coro de la Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria performs also opera repertoire, ranging from operetta (J. Strauss’ Die Fledermaus and Lehár’s The Merry Widow) and zarzuela in concert and staged version (La leyenda del beso, La del manojo de rosas, La verbena de la paloma, El barberillo de Lavapiés, Katiuska) to traditional opera (Norma). Among the Choir’s performances in 2008-2009, we mention the Puccini Gala organized by the Teatro Pérez Galdós, the world premiere of the opera Henry Clifford by Isaac Albéniz and, just ten days later, La vida breve by Manuel de Falla in the Festival de Música de Canarias. The Choir has also collaborated in a number of opera galas with important singers such as Nancy Fabiola Herrera, Maria Guleghina, Cristina Gallardo-Domâs, Anthony Rolfe-Johnson, José Bros, Carlos Mena, Nancy Argenta, Isabel Rey, Ainhoa Arteta, Alastair Miles and René Pape.

The Coro de la Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria has also collaborated in other shows, such as the musical Jesus Christ Superstar, the popular cantata Romance del Corredera and Tiempo de Gran Canaria which is dedicated to Néstor Álamo and released in DVD. The premiere of the Canary Islands’ official anthem in 2003, arranged by Benito Cabrera and Juan José Falcón Sanabria, the opening of the Teatro Cuyás (Don Giovanni) and the reopening of the Teatro Pérez Galdós (Beethoven’s Symphony No 9) figure among their performances. After their debut in the XI Festival de Música de Canarias in 1995 (Holst’s The Planets and Debussy’s Nocturnes), the Choir has participated consecutively in the Festival de Música from 2004 until now. Apart from many locations in Gran Canaria and Tenerife, the Choir has performed in Lisbon, Nevers, Venice and Zaragoza.

Among their last perfomances stands out Carmina Burana with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Las Palmas in the Festival de Teatro y Danza de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria 2010.

Its recordings include works by Conrado del Campo, Holst and Villa-Lobos, and the symphony choir or its Chamber Choir “Mateo Guerra” have participated in many series of the Fundación Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria like the Ensemble Nuevo Siglo, Gran Canaria Coral or Semana Santa Musical.

Digna Guerra, Andrzej Borzym, Marcin Lukasz Mazur and, nowadays, Luis García Santana have conducted the artistic course of the Coro de la Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria.
